This year I turned 50 and decided it was important to do something special to mark the occasion. My mum and dad came to visit from Zimbabwe and my older son was back from University in Holland so I booked us on a family trip at Wilderness Toka Leya in Livingstone. We couldn’t have chosen a better place to spend my birthday – Stephen and his team went out of their way to look after us and give us a very special stay. The food was exceptional, the staff and service top notch, the rooms very comfortable and cosy during the cold winter nights. We had the chance to enjoy a couple of in-house activities with our guide Golden, who I worked with many years ago at Wilderness. We went out on the Zambezi River on a couple of cruises and tried our hand at fishing. Sadly, we didn’t catch anything but we enjoyed being out on the river and saw many different birds, hippo, crocodiles and elephant. Golden also took us on a game drive in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park which we thoroughly enjoyed and we had a chance to do a short walk with the National Parks Scouts to find 2 of the white rhinos in the area. This was a highlight for us and wonderful to see these incredible animals in the wild. We also went on a back of house tour at Toka Leya and learnt how their sewage treatment system works and saw their worm farm and nursey. Alex got to a plant a tree as well! To mark my special occasion, I decided to treat the family to lunch at the Elephant Café – I had heard lots of great feedback on this activity but have never had the opportunity to experience myself. We certainly weren’t disappointed. We enjoyed our time with 3 of the elephants, feeding them pellets and learning more about them from their handlers. Then we enjoyed a fantastic meal at the café which was beautifully presented and explained to us by Head Waiter Oliver. I love how they use local and natural ingredients to create wonderfully tasty and visually stunning dishes. All in all, we had a great little trip to Livingstone and it was a special place to have spent my birthday.
