Places: Musekese Camp Impressions

Last weekend Dave, myself, our boys and two of their friends headed into the Kafue on a road trip to Musekese Camp on a much needed bush break. We had a good drive in and arrived at camp to a warm welcome by Phil, Beanie and the team, just in time for a delicious lunch on their deck overlooking the game rich dambo in front of the camp. During our time in camp we also had the chance to catch up with Photographic Guide, Edward Selfe, who was spending some time in Kafue preparing for some of his safaris next year, booked through People and Places. After a quick siesta and scones for tea we headed off with our guide Gilbert on a boat cruise on the Kafue River, a really magical experience for us all. We saw some incredible birdlife including a collared kingfisher, pied kingfisher, finfoot, and broad billed roller to name a few as well as hippo, crocodile and an incredible sunset. After a good night's rest we headed off early the following morning on a game drive with Gilbert to see what we could find. We weren't disappointed as we came across a pride of lion with their cubs sleeping peacefully in the shade of some trees. We also saw lots of elephant, puku, warthog, hartebeest and sable. Another boat cruise that afternoon saw more fantastic birding and on the drive back to camp a near miss with a leopard.

Phil and Tyrone have many special touches in their camp to give it a very warm and welcoming feel. The tents are spacious and comfortable - open at the front during the day so you can make the best of the dambo in front of camp, and securely zipped up with gauze sidings at night. Musekese is definately one of our favourite spots and being owner run is very personal. On our drive out we visited their new Musekese Conservation Centre and had the chance to meet one of the anti poaching teams just before they headed out on patrol. A very impressive set up with some excellent work being done in the area to protect the wildlife. If you visit our Giving Back page this is one of the projects in Zambia that we support.
