Blantyre

Malawi

The commercial hub of Blantyre is Malawi's second largest city and while it may not be a tourist attraction, it is the gateway to Southern Malawi.

Its cultural heritage and historic resources play a significant part of the city’s identity, as do the various shopping precincts that have been built in recent years. The must-visit shops to include African Habitat that has locally crafted ornaments and furnishings, and the Central Africana Gallery, which is full of fascinating books, modern and historical maps, and prints. Crafts and curios can be bought from street-side stalls in the city centre.

Blantyre has a number of historical buildings of interest. Perhaps the most impressive is the St Michael and All Angels Church, built by men with no training in architecture or construction. Others include the original town hall (known as the Old Boma) and the Mandala House, which now houses The Society of Malawi that protects and nourishes a true treasure trove of the country’s history.

Blantyre is the gateway to Southern Malawi with a network of roads connecting you to the various tourist attractions. Chileka International Airport is serviced by a few regional and international flight arrivals. There is a variety of accommodation in Blantyre, with hotels and lodges of all sizes and to suit different budgets.
