Eastern Highlands

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s longest mountain range is the Eastern Highlands, a collection of the Nyanga, Mutare/Bvumba and Chimanimani mountains that span 300km, separating the Zimbabwean Highlands from the Mozambican floodplains. This part of the country is a hiker’s paradise, where you will experience a cooler and wetter climate, rolling hills, streams and rivers, and mountain forests.

The pine forests and mountain lakes of the Nyanga National Park lend themselves to trout-fishing, horse-riding, hiking and golf. For those keen on a bit of adventure, there is exciting white water rafting to be enjoyed along the Pungwe River. Nyanga and neighbouring Chimanimani National Park are part of a vast, protected wilderness area, which supports interesting wildlife like the blue and samango sykes’ monkeys, East African little collared fruit bat and Marshall's pygmy chameleon.

Bvumba holds a wonderful variety of interesting sites, including the Mbiga Falls, Bvumba Botanical Gardens, Bunga Forest Botanical Reserve, Hivu Nursery, Mutare Museum, Mutare Heights, Lake Alexander and the Smallbridge Dam. Added to this list is the Leopard Rock Game Reserve, which homes impala, wildebeest, zebra, nyala and kudu, along with the world-famous Leopard Rock Hotel golf course.
