Kaingo means Leopard in the local Nyanja language, which is fitting as the camp has a long history with these incredible felines. The name itself came about due to the resident female leopard, Goldie, who liked the idea of Kaingo so much, she took up residence in one of the chalets.
Kaingo was built in 1992 and is Shenton Safaris’ flagship camp. Here, six chalets sit idyllically along the Luangwa River. Kaingo is designed simply, to make you feel at home in the bush and to offer you a chance to get close on safari the Shenton family way.
Back to South LuangwaKaingo is located in the northern territory of South Luangwa National Park that borders to the Nsefu Sector. It’s a two and a half hour drive from Mfuwe International Airport to Kaingo for all daytime transfers. If your flight arrives in the evening, you’ll be transferred in a closed vehicle as a transfer, rather than a game drive.
The area surrounding the Shenton Camps have been Derek Shenton’s domain for more than 26 years and you will get to explore deep into all the hidden wildlife hotspots this incredible area has to offer. The loops of roads travel from the Ebony Grove, along the Luangwa River and further inland into Lion Plains with ample changes in vegetation on the way.
