Mwamba, Shenton Safaris’ exclusive bush camp, is the epitome of Derek’s ethos. He created the camp on a poachers campsite in 1995 to push poaching out of the surrounding area. Mwamba has strong roots in Derek’s belief of conservation through tourism.
Mwamba means heaven in the local Nyanja language, and once you set foot in this incredible camp, you’ll see why. From initially hiding poachers until Derek pushed them out of the area, to being the location of Shenton Safaris’ most famous hide, Mwamba is truly Africa’s Best Place to Hide. Here, four chalets sit idyllically along the Mwamba River that dries out as the season progresses.

Location
Mwamba is located in the northern territory of South Luangwa National Park that borders to the Nsefu Sector. It’s a two and a half hour drive from Mfuwe International Airport to Mwamba for all daytime transfers. If your flight arrives in the evening, you’ll be transferred in a closed vehicle as a transfer, rather than a game drive.
The area surrounding Shenton's camps have been Derek Shenton’s domain for more than 26 years, his intricate network of roads are all graded with the Shenton Safaris tractor every year which means that when you are at Mwamba, you will get to explore into all the hidden wildlife hotspots this incredible area has to offer. The beautiful loops of roads travel from up north at Kapanda Lagoon, to the Baobab Forest and down to the Luangwa River passing Lion Plains, with ample changes in vegetation on the way.
Information
There are 4 thatch and reid chalets, recreated every year, made with interwoven bamboo walls and thatched roofing. Each chalet is set along the banks of the dry, meandering Mwamba riverbed with comfortable, shaded verandas from which to enjoy the abundant birdlife and feeling of total serenity.
Clean and silent solar power provides each room with lighting and cooling fans for the summer months.

There is a bush-style “chitenge” set under the deep shade of huge ebony trees, while the spacious deck offers a relaxing space with breathtaking views of the Mwamba river. It serves as a perfect spot for relaxation, providing an excellent vantage point for wildlife sightings.
Both communal dining and private dining are available and special dining options include bush breakfast and anthill lockout dinners.
Hides - Exclusive access to the Mwamba/Last Waterhole Hide. Shared access with Kaingo to the Wild Dog Lagoon Hide, Carmine Hide and Mobile Hide.
Guests of Mwamba have the exclusive opportunity to sleep out on the Numbu Star Bed. This incredible viewing platform in the centre of Numbu Plains is your private stargazing treehouse for the night.
Inclusive activities – game drives (max 4 guests per vehicle), walking safaris, and photographic hide sessions.
Available at an extra cost – private game drives either standard or with our photographic vehicle setup.

Shenton Safaris supports Project Luangwa and Conservation South Luangwa
A Luangwa Conservation and Community Fund( LCCF) Levy is included in rates and this is donated directly to these two projects. The lodge is happy to arrange meetings in camp in Kaingo’s Show Room with Conservation and Community representatives for interested guests to learn more, as well as arrange joint activities with Zambia Carnivore Program.
