Wilderness Safaris - Shumba

Kafue

Elegant Shumba, named after the prides of lion seen in the area, is found on a wooded island in the centre of the million-hectare Busanga Plains. Home to hundreds of red lechwe, puku and other plains game and their predators, the wild and remote floodplains seemingly go on forever.

Standing sentry over these endless plains are six luxury tented units raised on wooden platforms. Each spacious unit is a tranquil space from which to observe the wilderness – either from your bed, the various seating areas or even the indoor or outdoor showers.

Enjoy Zambian hospitality in the main area, where sumptuous dining, cooling off in the pool and shaded relaxation are the order of the day, while convivial fireside tales and stargazing are a nightly ritual.

As Wilderness Safaris began to operate in Kafue, opportunities arose to partner with the local people. Employment opportunities were the first step, initially in construction (with more than 150 labourers from surrounding villages helping to build the camps), and then in tourism. With permanent employment has come training and skills development.

The Wilderness Trust supports a number of projects including a strategic management plan and monitoring of lions and other carnivores, as well as a human-elephant conflict resolution study. These projects contribute towards a better understanding of how best to sustainably manage Kafue National Park and Zambia’s wildlife areas as a whole.

Wilderness Safaris has partnered with Pack for a Purpose, a non-profit organisation that provides travellers with up-to-date information about required supplies for community-based projects. Guests who would like to bring along a contribution can view the needs list for Shumba’s community projects on the Pack for a Purpose website.

Power Source at camps is a combination of generator and solar
