Likoma Island is the larger of the two inhabited islands on Lake Malawi. Beyond the shoreline and forests of baobab and mango trees awaits a small town filled with warm smiles and friendly waves from the people of Likoma.
A visit to the town is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture at restaurants, markets and festivals, which are generally centred around fishing and seafood. Although relatively underdeveloped with no paved roads and generator-powered electricity, this small island town features the third largest cathedral in Central Africa, St Peter’s Cathedral.
The waters surrounding Likoma Island are fantastic for snorkelling, sailing and swimming, while the beaches are perfect for relaxing under the warm African sun. The island has a tarred airstrip and can be reached by plane from Lilongwe.
